OUR IMPACT AREAS

Outfitting a Firefighter

Firefighters rely on specialized protective gear to safely respond to fires, medical emergencies, rescues, and hazardous conditions. This equipment includes helmets, turnout coats and pants, gloves, boots, protective hoods, and breathing apparatus designed to meet strict national safety standards.

Outfitting one firefighter with this essential gear can cost $15,000 to $25,000 or more, and it must be regularly replaced due to wear, exposure to heat and smoke, and evolving safety requirements.

Fire department vehicles are far more than trucks with lights and sirens — they are mobile emergency response units equipped to handle fires, medical calls, rescues, and natural disasters. Each vehicle is custom-built to carry specialized equipment, advanced safety features, and the tools firefighters and EMS crews rely on during critical moments.

The cost of a single emergency vehicle can range from $300,000 to over $1 million, depending on its purpose. Fire engines, ladder trucks, ambulances, and rescue units are designed to serve the community for many years, but they require significant upfront investment, regular maintenance, and eventual replacement to remain safe and reliable.

Firefighters and EMS personnel undergo continuous training to safely and effectively respond to emergencies. From fire suppression and rescue operations to emergency medical care, hazardous materials response, and evolving safety protocols, training is an ongoing requirement — not a one-time event.

Training costs include certification courses, continuing education, specialized instruction, equipment, and time spent away from active duty to maintain required credentials. As emergency response techniques, technology, and safety standards change, firefighters must regularly update their skills to meet national and state requirements.

Firefighters and EMS personnel face intense physical and emotional demands every day. Long shifts, high-stress emergency responses, exposure to trauma, and physically demanding work can take a lasting toll on both mental and physical health.

Wellness initiatives support firefighters beyond the call by focusing on mental health resources, peer support programs, physical fitness, injury prevention, and recovery. These programs help reduce burnout, improve job performance, and ensure firefighters are able to serve their community safely and sustainably throughout their careers.

WHY THE FOUNDATION MATTERS

Why The Foundation Matters

Protecting a community doesn’t stop at today’s call—it requires planning for what comes next.

Public funding and annual donations cover only a portion of what it takes to operate a modern fire department. The Foundation exists to help close that gap by supporting projects and priorities that require longer-term vision and sustained investment.

This approach allows the Lewes Fire Department to stay focused on emergency response, while the Foundation builds the financial strength needed to support growth, readiness, and innovation.
